Is it usual for cormorants to feed in freshwater? Luxor is around 250 kilometres from the Red Sea as the cormorant flies which is what threw me on this one!

Yes, Cormorants will feed in fresh water, they will feed in any water where there are fish. They are voracious hunters and I have seen them fishing as an orchestrated group forming a circle and effectively concentrating mullet into a "boiling" mass which they then gorge themselves on.
Little surprise that they are much hated in the U.K. where they feed at stocked rivers and lakes used by angling associations.

So such problem here - this is a glimpse of the shallows of the Nile on the same day I saw the cormorant.
