This looks incredibly like something which it isn't; what is it (extra points for saying what it looks like)?

I hope I'm not going to spoil the party by saying it looks like a female Bluethroat because I can't imagine what else it might be.

Well done Dave. Not sure about it being female since it is a juvenile, but Bluethroat it definitely is.

I only decided to post this here because four people commented on my PBase gallery that I had misidentified this bird and that it was an "odd" Fan-tailed Warbler. I began to think so myself (mainly because of the bill shape and the tail) and had to go back to look at some other shots to convince myself. The bill certainly does look like F-t W.

I've studied your very nice pic closely and I'm not getting any feel for a cisticola no matter how I try.

The bill does look a little odd but I put that down to soil or something, it doesn't look down-turned as a zitter might be. I'm not getting the tail either except that it is on the short side for a Bluethroat presumably because it's a juvenile as you say. The proportions are also very chat like too.

I'm sure if you'd cropped it just behind the eye & before the bill it would have been identifiable as a Bluethroat too based on FT's observation. Can you make it more difficult next time please.

Well, I could have said it was a Red-throated Pipit.

Dave, if that bill does not look decurved to you then you need new spectacles.

And this is a 100% genuine "Zitt" which does not have a bill as nearly decurved or as slim as the bird in my original post.

I don't wear spectacles :err:

Now that definitely is a RTP.... or a Whitethroat.
