Well done Dave. Would you have made it Short-toed without the Cork Oak (and the fact that I am in Portugal)?

Although I have had some very close-up views of this species I have never managed to get a good shot of one; they are always round the other side of the tree whenever I point a camera at them. The wing beat of this species is also so fast that I have never really been conscious of its flight profile, and the thing which struck me here was how similar it looks to Wallcreeper - I hadn't realised how broad and rounded the wings are.

Seriously, I tag this on in an attempt to get some publicity for "Fórum Aves", the Portuguese birdforum. It is a very small forum with a low volume of traffic (birding is a minority pastime over here) and after I badgered them enough about the fact that they weren't going to get far unless at least some of the forum was in English, and that most of the visiting birders here are British, they finally conceded and created an English-speaking section of which I am moderator.

What I hadn't realised until recently (just last weekend) was that the forum was not open to guests and that to even just read the threads you had to register (something which is next to impossible if you don't understand any Portuguese!). I have now persuaded the Admin (who are very nice people and are friends of mine) to "open up" both the English-Speaking section and the Galleria (photo gallery) to guests, although to post you would still have to register. It is not really that difficult to register if you are used to registering with other forums in English, and I recall that Brian Small managed to do it a while ago.

We are sadly lacking in communications media for birders and birdwatchers in Portugal and what I am trying to achieve is a vehicle for visiting and resident British birders (or I should say English-speaking since there are quite a few Dutch and German birders here who speak English but not Portuguese) to exchange information on birding localities, rarities, trip reports, or just about anything "birdy". But God, it aint arf bleeding hard work!
