Female Blackcap is a logical guess, but it is not a Blackcap.

Hmm. As your current location is Italy could it be a male Italian Sparrow? Stuck at work at the moment so no ID literature!

Chris,
Do not go by my current location. I have photos from many places and that is why I call this mystery game, What in the World?;)
I admit this one is a particularly difficult one. It's wet and I've cropped it (hint). You all are so good that I have to find very difficult photos. I realized that after a few postings and seeing someone id off the wake made by a diving bird.

Surely not? I don't see much to suggest a shrike, especially Woodchat.
Female Blackcap probably would have been my guess but it's difficult from this image.

ok then, a tit?
 Didn't foresee this scenario. I'll have to say yes, and no.:laugh:
If you had named a specific tit I could have said no, but because the bird has the word Tit in it's name, I think a simple no might be misleading. It's not a Paridae, so it's really not a tit--it's a Wrentit. Many people confuse Bushtits and Wrentits, the Wrentit does look like a tit. The head seems a bit brown for a Southern Cal bird, but the coloring was hard to see because he had just come up from a bath. I think this was a pretty difficult mystery--well done.

Today is not my day for computering. I had to shrink the photo because it was too big to download by a few ks. now it looks a bit distorted, but I think it shows well enough for our purposes. Speaking of photos, you've posted a few very nice ones, Joe.

Hi Snowfinch,
Welcome to SB Forum. Yes, it's a wrentit. The photo was taken in Huntington Central Park, Huntington Beach, CA.

Hi Mark,
Welcome to SurfBirds. The bird is a Wrentit. It is found in the Pacific Western States of the US. I think it is in a class of it's own, but maybe someone more knowledgeable will come up and correct me and give us both an education.
