I always thought they were pointless anyway.

We had disabled them yesterday because of some complaints. There had been a few members giving low ratings on other members' photos and leaving no comment. Is the score out of 10 really that useful or are the comments more useful? Let us know.

I'm with John on this, they are a waste of time in most respects because we don't know what the vote is for (composition, image quality, species rarity, etc. - or a combination of all?), and a vote of 8 by one person might be 4 by someone else using different criteria. Anyhow, photos are "art" and no two people will ever agree on art whether it is a photo, sculpture or poetry.

I would tend to s.... the numerical vote but encourage more constructive criticism.

I would also offer a few guidelines for posting, the two which immediately come to mind being:

1. Do not post too many shots of the same bird, especially if the poses are rather similar. Be selective and try to make a better job of processing the shot you do submit.

2. The no size limit on the Forum Gallery is a great luxury but some images are posted far too large in terms of dimensions. My own images are lifted from my Photobucket or PBase galleries where I upload them at 800 pixels longest dimension (a common standard dimension for web-hosting sites) but at maximum image quality. So, the option of "click for larger image size" in my case just brings up a larger file size (Kb) of better I.Q. rather than an an image of original (capture) dimensions which has to be scrolled to see the entire thing and often is at poorer I.Q. At the other extreme there are some excellent photos which are posted way too small to do them justice (I know that John prefers them that way, but that is another problem :err:).

Hope that makes sense.

Colin

P.S. At the end of the day people don't have to post photos nor do people have to look at them, so maybe it is all a bit irrelevant.

Talking about size limits the main European gallery is interesting. There are guidlines about sizes etc but no one seems to bother. Some think "big " is best. I admit mine are a bit over at 650 but I try and keep them at that.

Do not post too many shots of the same bird, especially if the poses are rather similar

Thats an interesting one too !

Although this is a great place to see Photographs of Birds, and I have posted some of my own. This is Birding Website. If you are looking for Photo Ratings, I can recommend several good ones. I would rather receive comments, and constructive critique, from people who know Birds. Ratings are unnecessary.
