wolverines?

Hi, Ive just been birding in my local woods in Lithuania. Following a black woodpecker in to the trees I came across what I think were a pair of wolverines? They were about 1 meter long, black underneath, flat wide bodies, off white scruffy fur on back, dog like face, black eyes and round ears. they showed the opposite of the timiditynormally associated with woodland creatures (are they dangerous?) where can i find out more about them?

Hi Marco, congrats. Never seen one but sound like Wolverines. The trusted old Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolverine)has a good section. They're meant to be aggressive but no idea if they are to humans. I'd probably keep my distance.

Are you sure they were not Raccoon Dogs, rather than Wolverines?

The description you give seems pretty good for Raccoon Dog and these are fairly common (but rarely seen) in the woods in Lithuania. Wolverines are a more northern species, the closest being in the taiga-type forests of Finland and northern parts of Russia, they have not (to the best of my knowledge) ever been seen in Lithuania. Where in Lithuania was this?

Thanks, having seen the pictures Raccoon Dogs it is, never heard of them before, nice surprise.

Currently I am living in the panevezio raj of lithuainia.
