Seen at Langstone harbour, Havant, 31 March 2008
This bird is approximately the size of a sparrow. It rose up from the grass and climbed almost vertically with the body horizontal to the ground. It flapped its wings furiously all the time as it climbed to about 60/70ft. Calling all the time.

I was lucky that the shutter speed was high enough to freeze the wing beats
