Hi guys,

Over the past few days, I have noticed large flocks of gulls circling over a particular area for hours on end. They gather together in large numbers and wheel round and round high up. I am not yet sure what species of gull they are (maybe mixed groups?). I was wondering if anybody could shed any light as to what they are doing? Thanks,

Rob

Feeding on swarms of mating ants. Fairly common behaviour at this time of year on hot calm days when ants are swarming.

All species of gull in the area will join in, but most commonly Black-headed Gull, as they're more agile. I have seen even Herring and GBB Gulls take part though. So too will all sorts of other birds, it's such a rich source of easily-caught protein that it's too good to miss.
