Congratulations to forum member Dean Eades for winning this year's "Birdguides Photo of the Year" competition ( http://www.birdguides.com/webzine/article.asp?a=1533 ) with a stunning image of two Gannets at Bempton Cliffs.

Marcus Conway's slightly abstract image of a Puffin was also excellent, as was our own Mr Robinson's Green Woodpecker.

Well done all.

Yes, well done Dean. Excellent composition. I do also like that Puffin pic too.

Didn't put two and two together that's our John's Green Woodpecker. Nice job John!

Never easy to judge any photo competition, and nature photography is especially difficult (you ought to see the flack that the winner of "Wildlife Photographer of the Year" is getting on a certain photography forum with his shot of a Snow Leopard).

I have just had another look at the winner and runners up on the Birdguides competition. I think that the raptor shots are rather lack-lustre, Kit Day's shot of the Green Bee-eater lacked "something" (great photographer though he is), and although Dean's image was a justified winner I rather fancied Matthijs Ravensberg's shot of the Little Egret with prey - unfortunately, in my opinion, the crop was wrong and he should have done a bit more processing to give the image some "POP", but a closer cropped portrait style for that image would have got my vote.

There's always some photos that are easy to give "0 points", though!

Like my pic of a Wilson's Phalarope . . .

At least I don't have to worry about anyone breaching my copyright . . .

Some great photographs, thanks for pointing them out. I rather liked the Cormorant capture myself. Once you are passed a certain quality it becomes all about taste and style I think. I love the photographs that give that "pop" as well. I find them stunning. However, on occasion they go too far and I feel it looks fake. Some people like that fake look, others don't.....
