There is currently much controversy within "DSLR Circles" as to the value and advisability of Canon having introduced a HD Video facility into their "Pro-Level" camera bodies.

The first one to get it is the recently released full-frame 5D MkII, but it is likely to appear in the forthcoming 1D and 1Ds MkIV models (which I eagerly await).

The world-renowned Philippine bird photographer Romy Ocon has just released this video footage of a Purple Heron shot with a 5D MkII and 500mm f/4 + 2.0TC. Quite remarkable, and something which will surely revolutionize image submissions to rarity committees:

That is really impressive footage. Looking forward to more birders getting HD video and sharing on the web. This really is quite a rig Romy uses though! Glad someone is willing to lug that around.

I have a Nikon D90. I was all set to buy the D300 however moved to the cheaper D90 as it had most of the features I would actually use from the D300 and most of all had the video. I wasn't actually thinking of collecting or producing any movies but really all about bird iding. I usually shoot through a 500mm lens and would take less then a minute of bird footage and its amazing how easy it is to id a bird you normally would only be about 80% sure of. Between the sound and the movement of the bird it has greatly increased my iding ability.

Romy Ocon (who I admire as one of the world's greatest bird photographers) has just posted this on DPReview - could not resist sharing it here:

I can only hope that when I next upgrade my current 1DMk3 to its successor it will have this HD Video facility.
