Hi all
Some truly gripping photos of arguably one of the most sort-after WestPal birds - Andalusian Hemipode (Turnix sylvatica sylvatica) in the new 'Rapport de la Commission d’Homologation Marocaine' available from http://www.go-south.org/ - see the Go-South Bulletin (excerpt below). Turnix sylvatica is a polytypic species (I've seen T. s. dussumier in India!) and T. s. sylvatica is considered to be extinct in Europe, and was until now thought to have been extirpated from North Africa as well. Perhaps some conservation initiatives can turn this subspecies' fortunes around and we won't have to resort to reintroduction (as mooted by Pertoldi et al. 2006 [attached]).
