The four pics at the top of the main page now seem to be random, and often quite old . . . until a couple of days ago, they were the four most recently added pics, which meant one could see what was being added. Now, one can't.
Can it be put back to the four most recent, please?

Another problem, quite often some of the row of four photos don't show. See printscreen below, made just now.

So far they've always showed for me, but they only show the top 4 albums with the most views and comments.
Doesn't bother me, just thought, I mention it ;)

I agree with Colin and Michael, i preferred it when you saw a preview of the latest photo's to be added to the gallery's.

I think that the current situation (random photos shown in the "header") is a disincentive to post new photos - it certainly is for me.
Surely more preferable to show recently added photos? I might also suggest invoking a new rule which restricts the number of photos a member can upload to, say, two images in a 24 hr period (Naturescapes.Net are very strict on this in order to prevent "prolific shooters" swamping the galleries). I myself am probably guilty of posting more than this on occasions, but there have been some posters who have uploaded much larger numbers of images in one go - if there was a restriction it would make one more selective about what was uploaded.

Doesn't seem as though anyone is listening to this - I will not be posting images again until we go back to the original format:

I didn't know that there's / should be a restriction on uploads.
Sorry if I crossed a border there. :puzzled:

We'll put it back to latest photos across the forum homepage. When the forum software got upgraded, that feature got reset to random photos. Nicole, there are no restrictions on uploads but the latest 4 photos will appear across the forum homepage so, generally it's nice to let everyone get their photos to show up there so maybe we'll also limit to just a couple of photos a day too.

Well, with my fairly slow connection and me tagging and naming the things I upload, anyone should get a fair chance to get pics in anyway.
And maybe Colin didn't mean me, I don't know.

One more thing, it might have been mentioned already:
The recent photos don't show the real recent uploads. They just show a variety of recent(or not really so recent any more) pics.

This is something I never really thought about before and you have made me feel very guilty about uploading far too many images in a short period. You're right and it won't happen again.:err:

Nicole,
It has been mentioned already; MichaelF originally pointed out that after the new gallery software was installed the "header" was just a random selection of photos from the galleries rather than the most recent uploads, and that this was not a good idea - I and exeter_UK agreed with this.
I do not think that there is any incentive now to post new images if they are just "going into the bag" and waiting to pulled out at random.

Nicole & Jacqueline,
There currently is no limit on the number of images anyone can upload, so no-one has transgressed any "rules". It was just a suggestion of mine that perhaps some sort of limit might be a good idea. In the past some people have uploaded dozens at a time, and often these were not of a very high quality and often included several similar images of the same species. If there was a limit it would make people a bit more selective about what they did upload and, if we went back to the original scheme of having the most recent images displayed in the "header", would mean that a large batch of images from one poster didn't immediately "bury" other peoples photos.
I made a reference to "Naturescapes.Net" (arguably the most high profile nature photography forum) where their rules are, in my opinion, over strict: in the "Birds Section" you are only allowed one image in 24 hrs (in fact I think it might be in 48 hrs).
Just my thoughts and suggestions.

No Nicole, I didn't mean you!
Have now just noticed Admin's post above (#11), so maybe we are on course for an improved system (i.e. as it was before the new software).
In any case, if you were eager to post more shots of, for example, birds you had seen today you could always embed them in a new thread in the "Been Birding Today" forum and then maybe upload the best couple or so to your gallery.

I did not mean the header, Colin.
I am talking about the section Photo Albums -> Recent Photos (http://www.surfbirds.com/albums/)
They are not the most recent. Plus there seems to be a little bug.
After changing some albums yesterday, some pics show up with "no thumbnail".
I get your point with the "burying". That makes sense.
Thanks, Colin.
Right now I am just "learning" the Best way to shoot small birdies and ID them.
I am fairly slow and my workflow will slow down anyway. I only try to upload one, max. two of the same one of one session. They are far from perfect (like yours), but I bet they'll improve ;)

Wow! Just read through this thread for the first time. Feeling embarrassed for having uploaded five photos today (first for at least a week though!), but then they didn't get loaded into the main album for general viewing for some reason, only into my own area.

Don't worry, nothing's official yet ;)
Regarding the Album. You have two options.
Your own area with albums and forum albums.
A bit confusing.
The forum albums are here: http://surfbirds.com/albums/
And the others you find via your profile or the quick links.
Hope that helps, Cheers

Thanks Nicole, however, for clarity:
From my user control panel (CP), if I click on "Photo Albums" I am taken to a page the majority of which is taken up with a section headed "Recent Photos". Previously, if I have uploaded photos using the "Upload photo" button on the same page, then that photo has immediately been shown under the "Recent photos" section, which is what I think we all want to happen. Today they were not. They were only loaded into my own photo section. But if I click on the "Recent Photos (1 day)" button under the Search box, then they are displayed.
Is this a change to how things work, or a glitch?

Mh, maybe really a glitch?
My shots from yesterday still show up with "no thumbnail" too.
Let's wait for the admin and hope he can enlighten us :)

Yes, this upgrade to the forum software came with photo albums and it looks like that's more confusing than helpful. Too many albums so we may disable the forum albums soon. The main albums are here: http://www.surfbirds.com/albums/
Also, want to thank you all for the patience, notes and feedback. It's very much appreciated and very helpful after we've done an upgrade to know what is and isn't working. Thanks :notworthy:

But we are still stuck with random images coming up on the header of the main forum page which says "Featured Photos"; why can't we go back to having the most recently uploaded images?

That was six months ago, and photos uploaded to members albums are still not appearing in "Recent Photos".
