The expected upgrade to the 450D has been launched with the unsurprising model no. 500D. It features a 15.1mp CMOS sensor and true HD video recording at 1080P. The downside is Remote Capture won't work on my Intel Mac.

I noticed the 450D body price dropped on Camerapricebuster today, hopefully it is a sign of things to come for the 40D and 50D if there is a new 60D to come.

i really hope canon can produce a really impressive camera with a decent sensor. i think its about time we got something to impress, esp noise wise

Well, from what I have read (quite extensively) and seen of Rob Galbraith's "beta test" of the 500D I would not get too excited. The video is, apparently, rubbish (very "jerky" compared to the 5DMkII) and the rest of the "specs" are not too impressive either. It has been disparagingly referred to as a Canon "pot boiler".
Here are a couple of shots from a very elderly (my first DSLR) 400D/Rebel XT:

Much better to spend your money on "glass" (quality lenses - it is the lens which "takes" the image, the camera only "records" it).

Nice & sharp images there Colin. I feel we're getting megapixel fever with any new camera release which comes at a cost.
And a cost I won't be tempted with at THIS (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0020MLKFA/ref=s9_k2a_c5_t2?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=0S0NQ73V7989SW0955ZY&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=463374933&pf_rd_i=468294) price. The Nikon D90 looks a better buy, but what do I need video for? I've got a Sony HDR-FX7 which does the job fairly well although the convenience of having one camera which does both jobs is a nice thought, I just don't think we're quite there yet. The Sony takes still images at a measly & very noisy 1mp.

with most new cameras coming out with loads of mega pixels its nice to see that one company has decided to kerb the amount of mega pixels and concentrate on developing a sensor to produce better images with less noise, that company is olympus. It will be interesting to see what they can do with the four thirds sensor, their pro optics have been described as superb, so something good should be on its way within the next year or so.
there is an interesting interview on dpreview http://www.dpreview.com/news/0903/09032002olympusinterview.asp
