View Full Version : Mull in August

Hi all

I have the opportunity to visit Mull in early August with my family. It wouldn't be a specific birding trip, but I plan to do as much birding as I can.

Target birds would of course be Golden and White-tailed Eagles, but anything else around would be nice. Presumably it's too late to get views of Corncrake, but by early August are there still any Black Guillemots that are easily accessable?

I will probably have a week on the island and will have the use of a car, so is there anything else that would be worth travelling for?

Eagles are my priority, so can anyone give me some info on viewpoints or specific areas that would be good?

Many thanks
Joe

Hi Joe,

Tysties [Black Guillies] are easiest in Oban Harbour while you're waiting for the ferry; you'll likely see plenty from the ferry crossing as well.

Ask locally on Mull for eagle viewpoints - fairly sure the RSBP have a viewpoint organised, but not sure where it is. WTE can be seen just about anywhere though, including flying over the ferry.

Corncrakes won't be easy. Iona is the best place for them.

Good photo-ops for Lesser Black-backed Gulls from the ferry, they particularly like sausages, but also enjoy fingers, so be careful!

Hi Joe,

I am going to Ardnamurchan in May and plan to go across to Mull for one day. What info I can get from that I will let you have on my return.
