Need help right away!

hello, some robins made a home on top of our front porch, 4 birdies came out of it. usually the mom bird is always around or on the nest, the birds have been getting bigger. yesturday one of them got frightened when we opened the door and tried to fly away (tehy cannot fly yet) so he like emergency landed (no injuries, pretty smooth landing, but he wasnt getting enough lift to fly, only to slow down his fall) anyways, he wasnt able to get back in the nest, the two parent birds were trying to teach him how to fly and i havent seen either parent since. is it possible they abbandoned the other 3? should i try to feed them some worms? its close enough to the ground that i can reach up and put a worm or two near the nest? what should i do if anything?

Hello JeremieD, usually the best thing to do is nothing. Stay as far away from the nest as possible so the parents will be more likely to come back. Did the youngster that fell out stay out of the nest or did you put it back?

nope, didnt put it back , in fear of frighting the other birds to jump off or whatever & didnt want to touch him and scare him more. i did see the parents later today so their back but i havent seen the youngster that jumped out yet... they are about 3/4 size of the adults so im assuming thats pretty close to flight time anyway?

The best advice as always is to do nothing & leave the parentsd to do the job. However, you should monitor the nest at a distance to see if the parents have actually deserted it.

If !!!! you are convinced that they have indeed deserted the nest, then you have a big job. putting any food beside the nest or even in it will do nothing. You must put food into the mouths of the chicks.

This should be cut up pieces of worms as whole ones are often too large. if you are unable to get worms, then small pieces from a tin of dog meat is a good back up. Do not use bread or milk!!!

When the chicks leave the nest, you must continue to feed them until they are independent. I would dig the garden & let them stay with you picking at insects you disturb & pass towards them. It is all a charming process, but best left to the parents as they are far better than humans.
