I saw this duck on the Big Island, Hawaii. I think it might be a hybrid, it does have the mallard curly tail, does anyone know what it is? Thanks!

Hi meegs, it's a domesticated hybrid type duck (with Mallard in it).

Probably domesticated Mallard × domesticated Muscovy Duck
Alcedo atthis

No muscovy duck x mallard hybrid as it has the tail curls and general tail shape and pattern of mallard together with a yellowish bill this makes just and ugly domestic (mallard) duck.

Ugly! :eek:There is no such thing as an ugly mallard. Muscovy, yes; but not mallards. They may be common and even pests in someplaces, but they are beautiful and they make great ambassadors for birding. Ever notice the faces of the very young as they feed the ducks (hopefully with park approved duck feed). Poor Mallards, they just get no respect!;)
