I thought I would start a new thread on which photos of colour-ringed gulls could be posted - I hope others will add theirs. I will start with three from Southwold, Suffolk:-
1. Lesser Black-backed JHZ2 on black from Norway
2. Mediterranean AAHT - 05 October 2009 (from Germany)
3. Mediterranean AANZ - 05 Feb 2009 (from Germany?)
I will post the details as I get them.
Please post your images and we might build up a bit of an archive or resource.

this was the reply i got from the ringer...
"Hi Michael, Thank you for reporting your sighting of Herring Gull Orange 2056. the details for this bird are attached. As you can see this is a local bird, with multiple sightings. It was ringed as part of a project looking at the roof nesting gulls in Scarborough, so the sightings of these birds, still in Scarborough are very useful, as they confirm that the bird is still in the area! Thank you also for the photograph, very nice! This is actually the first photo I have had of 2056, and given that this is now the gull with the most sightings, it is interesting to have a photo to go with them! Thank you for taking the time to report this sighting. if you have any questions, or any more sightings, please get in touch. Cheers Sara Bone"

Brian,
This is part of an email I received in response to an observation I posted on another forum of 300+ Med Gulls at Ria de Alvor last winter:
I'm the international coordinator of colour ringing programmes on Mediterranean Gulls. We are trying to receive more ringreading from Portugal. I went already 4 times to Portugal specifically for this.
Would you be ready to focus on ringreading of Med Gulls? Or do you know someone who could do this?
Best regards,
Renaud

You might already be aware of this guy, if not you might find it of interest.

Hi Colin
I am unaware of the Med Gull ringreading, but there is a great site on which all colour ringing is logged - http://www.cr-birding.be/
If you scroll down on the homepage, you find a table with various families and this links to them and the various ring colours.

I've seen this ringed Herring Gull on my patch at Melton along the R.Deben on a few occasions. It was ringed as a pullus on Havergate Island 14.07.2007. The red ring is KVL (metal ring GG77714). Dates encountered on the R.Deben include 07.04.2008, 05 and 13.03.2009 and 16.04.2009.

Interestingly, two Herring Gulls arrived at Southwold harbour today with the same colour and type of ring. From the Thames estuary, believe.....

Camille Duponcheel is in charge of the database for Belgian and Dutch-ringed Med Gulls, and is a good first contact for colour-ringed Meds seen in the UK. I have had very quick responses from him. He can be contacted at cduponcheel@nordnet.fr
Also have a look at the Med Gull site at
http://medgull.free.fr
for further information on the Europe-wide Mediterranean Gull ringing scheme (including a page of codes / ring colours) and links to some interesting papers!

Colour ringed LBBG turned up on the patch yesterday. Left tarsus, dark (black?) background with yellow writing. Looked like R285 to me. Anybody know where it may have come from? Can't say I noticed a metal ring on the other leg...
