Aythya Hybrid

Hello, my first posting.

I would welcome your views on the parentage of this Aythya hybrid duck.


The pictures were taken on Redcar Tarn near Keighley in West Yorkshire in April 2009 and whilst they have been cropped they have not been adjusted for colour etc.

Pictures 1, 3 and 4 were taken in fairly poor light and picture 2 was taken about half an hour after the first when the light had improved and it was quite remarkable how the apparent colour of the bird looked very different.

Not dissimilar to a hybrid in Dumfries and Galloway in Dec. See attached.

I'd guess at a bit of Pochard and Tufted Duck....

Thanks for your responses, I was also guessing it to be a Pochard Tufted mix.

Yep, a classic Tufted x Pochard. Splendid creatures they are too!
