  • Wintering 'Turtle Dove' in Romania

There is a small TURTLE DOVE wintering with Collared Doves in Romania at the moment which has been well photographed and studied. Szilard Darocz has asked for help in identifying the bird and it is my view that it is a EUROPEAN TURTLE DOVE. Please take a browse at the myriad of images and add any comments if you disagree with my identification

I agree this is a 1cy Euro Turtle Dove. The few moulted scapulars show the typical pattern. Further, this is s small and delicate bird. Even meena would be much heavier than this.

I agree with you, this bird shows a lot of features typical of ETD:

-in the first picture is evident a cospicous amount of bare skin around the eye
-head looks small and not Collared Dove-like
        -bill is long and thin
-in the first picture the GC pattern is typical with wide and diffuse orange-tinged tips
-comparing primary projection to tail is quite difficult, I find easier to look at the shape of the wing: Oriental Turtle Dove's wing is like a triangle with a wide base but a short height, while European's wing is like a triangle with a small base and a long height.
In this bird the wing is long and narrow
-OTD would be darker overall (meena too), especially on head, nape and breast
-there is a lot of white in the tail: OTD has smaller white "tips" to the tail
-looks much smaller than the Collared Doves close by; the meena me and the other members of the MISC observed on Linosa last fall was just a fraction smaller than Collared Doves.
-white and orange markings on coverts, scapulars and tertials are too soffuse for OTD

all of these features make it a juv European ; )

Do you have any photographs of the Oriental Turtle Dove (meena) recorded on Linosa last year?
