    I be;ieve this is a Common Sandpiper (Actitis hypoleucos). Can anyone please confirm?

    Yep, it is. Most go to Africa for the winter, but a few do stay to winter here, mainly on the south coast.

      I have seen this (or another of it's type) winter in the same area of Langstone harbour for the last 3 years.
      The rising/falling tide always ensures food is available, even in the freezzing conditions of yesterday. The concrete sea defences in this part of the harbour trap the food as the tide recedes and this bird just works along the edges, picking up food.

        The area around Budds Farm is a long time favourite wintering area, they are often along the creek alongside Broadmarsh. You can get a good idea of the status of different species in Hampshire by joining Hampshire Ornithological Society and so getting the annual bird report, loads of records from Langstone Harbour in there.
