  • Black-necked Grebe confirmation please Alentejo Portugal

Looking at my photos I took last month I found these.

Can you confirm it is a Black-necked Grebe?

    Thanks,

    Bert

Bert, the confusion species with BN Grebe is Slavonian Grebe but this looks a much cleaner black and white bird (in winter plumage) with a distinctive capped appearance and a differently shaped head. However, I think I'm right in saying that Slav doesn't occur in Portugal. Dan

          Thank you Dan,

According to Collins the Slavonion Grebe does not occur in Portugal, then again, you will never know. My friends in the Netherlands say that nowadays birds are spotted that should not be there at all. Something to do with climate change? Or some other reason?

As far as I can ascertain there are 3 records of Slavonian Grebe in Portugal. Black-necked is a winter visitor and resident, although reaching 100+ birds at one or two sites regularly

By the way, I send you some emails a few weeks ago, did you get them?

I don't know if I wasn't clear but the bird in the photos is 100% BN Grebe - even ignoring the plumage features its shape alone is diagnostic.

I only have one email that I haven't yet replied to Bert. Will do!

                  Hi Simon,

Yes, you were clear. I meant to say that perhaps in the future I might stumble on a rarity.

                  Thanks,

                  Bert
