  • Possible Kelp Gull New Zealand

These pictures were taken crossing the Cook Strait between North and South Island. Both pictures are the same bird is it a juvenile Kelp Gull. I get very confused with all the different names for the same bird. Karoro, Southern Black Back Gull, Kelp Gull etc.

    Gull

    Hi Mike,
according to my 'Simpson and Day'...this should be a juv Kelp Gull Larus dominicanus.

Bill is and wing pattern seem to fit

Immature Kelp Gull doesn't have the white rump.

    Cheers, Andy

Yes juv Black-Backed Gull. While we have been here in NZ I have not heard any one call it Kelp Gull, sometimes by its Maori name Karoro but nearly always BBG.
There are only three gulls here in NZ, the BBG, the Red-Billed Gull and the Black-Billed Gull, so gull ID is usually quite easy but Skuas can sometimes throw a spanner in the works!

Thanks Tom the reason I mentioned Kelp Gull is I record all by sightings onto a program called Bird Journal and all the different names come together there.
