  • Iceland Gull in Langstone Harbour

    The Iceland Gull (Larus glaucoides)
This gull breeds in Greenland but normally ranges in the northern atlantic. These birds follow the fishing boats off Iceland (like all giulls, they are always up for a free meal), and as a result can be seen at this time of the year in Iceland, Norway, Denmark, Scotland, and the west and east coasts of England (normally excluding the south coast).
The bird is about the same size as a Herring Gull and the adult is all white. This bird is a 1st year juvenile and has made Broadmarsh its temporary home. There is another Iceland Gull in the south coast area but this is an older bird (probably second year). The plumage fades as the bird gets older.
