  • Arctic birding festival videos + trip report

Just posted a new article on our webiste about Gullfest 2012, with two youtube style mini docu┤s. Mark Maftei┤s Surfbirds trip report is also featured. We had a great event with approx 50 birders visiting this first ever Arctic birding festival, and several hundred locals showed up to take part in this event. Gull ringing at our Lavvo base camp was a higlight that apealed to both birders and non-birders. Also featuring the event was a series of exellent talks, and more birding trips (pelagics, bird cliff, etc). In Varanger this event was a turning point for local awareness of the regions birdlife - a key part in future bird and nature conservation issues. Huge thanks to all birders who took part in Gullfest! The event even made it to national tabloid newspapers, national TV in addition to local media. Good for birds, birders - and locals.

On a Varanger bird news note: the road to Hamningberg just opened, and more nice birding areas are accesible. Found a raft of 250+ King Eiders, 500+ eiders, 200+ Long-tailed ducks, and the first spring Arctic Skua flew by, all just a few km north of Vardo town. Lots of snow buntings around too (anyone with good info / resources on ssp vlasowae?).

    Gullfest videos, etc :

We have just set the dates for next years Gullfest (new and improved, and one week earlier for more King Eiders, and better chance of Aurora borealis): in Vard° 5-8th of April + taiga prologue + tundra epilogue
    Stay tuned for updates!
