Dropped down to Waipu reserve, this holiday Wednesday in the hope of seeing good numbers of NZ Dotterels and maybe a real NZ rarity, the Fairy Tern!
The tide was well in and the shell bank in the lagoon should of been alive with birds.
So imagine my disappointment then as I drove down to see the lagoon full of paraboarding sails and small speed boats. It is the holiday season I suppose but all this going on so close to such a sensitive breeding location for the so very rare NZ Fairy Tern. How the people who try and look after them cope I just dont know.
To be fair there were some Variable Oystercatchers and Red-Billed Gulls but little else. Still I only lingered there a few minutes and then moved just down the road to Langs beach and an ice cream!
I did find there a number of interesting wrecked sea birds! A Fluttering Shearwater, Cooks Petrel and a little Blue Penguin. Little compensation I know, still I hope to get back soon as its usually a great place to go.
Have a great New Year All.
