I posted a picture of a "Ferruginous Duck" on scarce birds gallery. The bird was at Blashford Lakes, Hampshire today and in many respects looks pretty good....but the head shape does look poor, very rounded. It looks very like one of the birds posted as a hybrid on an earlier thread, what was not clear was what were all the wrong features of that bird.
This one is good for overall size and "bulkiness", bill is ok as is lack of grey marks etc. But that head looks wrong to me. I admit I have not seen many, but the really good ones have all had high crowns. If it is a hybrid wioth pochard it is a very small one.
Also does anyone know what either of the recently reported "good" ones at Longham, Dorset or Fishlake, Hants, looked like?
