Saw a male and female Red-breasted Merganser january 17, 2012 in Bedford Basin, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

You can see the distinctive spiky head and long narrow bill of the male in the photo. I saw them in the same place 2 weeks ago as well. Shy birds, seem to stay far from the coastline and do not mingle with nearby flocks of ducks and seagulls.

I don't think they normally winter this far north but it's been a mild winter so far.
