Sorry no photo as it all happened too fast.
A bird looking like a small bird of prey, about the size of a slim wood pigeon, came into our garden (rural setting, surrounded by farmland) and sat on the apple tree.
It had brown plumage and an incredibly distinct throat/top of chest piece of a red-brown/chestnut colour - it was in a perfect 'u' shape and looked sort of a 'dense' colour [ie no flecking at all], and as if on very short, soft feathers so looked 'smooth'. When it flew off it had a fan shape tail.
I've looked at all I can but can't see anything with this distinctive throat colouring/shape.
I'd love to know what it was.
