Check out this fabulous once-in-a-lifetime opportunity! For anybody that is interested in birds, the arctic, and meeting fellow birders and scientists, this trip promises to satisfy on all counts. I will be there representing the High Arctic Research Group, a Canadian based scientific collaboration currently involved in several bird related projects including the largest tracking study ever of Sabine's gulls, monitoring/tracking projects looking at Ivory gull movements, and of course, our main focus, a multi-year project looking to fill in some of the many gaps in our knowledge of Ross's gulls.
Gullfest is not 'just' a run of the mill birding trip and it will really be more of a showcase of some amazing birds in an amazing part of the world with a chance to meet and chat with some leading scientists in the field. Boat trips, banding, ID clinics and many other unique activities round out the program. Even non-birders should have fun exploring the charming town of Varanger where this event will be based. Birds expected to be frequently encountered include some absolute stunners - flocks of breeding plumage Steller's eiders, white-tailed eagles, Siberian tit and Siberian jay, hawk owl, and of course more gulls than you can shake a stick at!
