The strangest thing happened. While birding we saw what we think is a Sea otter. Never thought it was this big. Fantastic experience. Can anybody fill me in with more information about this animal? First photo is close by about 20 meters, the other photos at least 200 meters.

    Thanks,

    Bert

    Hi Bert

Sea Otters Enhydra lutris are restricted to the northern Pacific, from California up through Alaska and then across to NE Russia. Your animal is a Eurasian Otter Lutra lutra - in fact the only Otter species found in Europe - but unusually good views of one! The distribution map in the Handbook of the Mammals of the World shows that Eurasian Otters are present throughout Portugal and Spain. I especially like the first photo!

The total length of a big male can be 1.3 metres including the tail, and they can weigh up to 14 kilos. Males are 50% bigger than females ... so perhaps yours is a male.
