I agre with Redshank as the id and here's why

    1. Upper mandible clearly shows colour change midway, spotshank it would be completely dark
    2. Even given the angle of the head you can see that the bill is rather short, spotshank would be much longer.
    3. The supercilium is just too faint/weak, in spotshank it's much stronger.

You are welcome Bert, I always feel it is better giving reasons why you come with the id. It may then help other people in the future.

appologies for my short answer the other night. Keith is right, you should always give an explanation for your answers. Here's what i always look for to find a spotshank- winter plumage is very pale silver grey, long legged, and long fine bill. lower mandible to the bill is red at base fading out half way down, and black otherwise. They also always show a stronger supercillium. in flight they lack the white in the secondaries and inner primaries. summer is easy for you as you know, the moulting adults that return is summer are always a sight to behold and are the first returning artic breeding wader.

    Cheers, Nick
