This bird was not on a golf course, Colin but happily residing in the gardens of the Hyatt Regency, Taba Heights on the Gulf of Aqaba. I glimpsed two in February in the same location, which were impossible to photograph and I saw this one last week.
To me, the head looks like a Spotted Crake and the body more like a Water Rail.
What really surprises me is their choice of habitat. The hotel rooms are housed small two storey units which are dotted around a huge garden. There is plenty of dense vegetation but the environment bares no comparison to a freshwater wetland. There three large freshwater swimming pool and a number of small ones as well as a saltwater lagoon and of course miles of Red Sea but little real privacy for a secretive species.
It this as usual as I suppose?
P.S. As you can see from the second pic or should I say blur, the bird wasn't thrilled with human company!
