What are these ?
Hi everyone, I keep taking photos and then have to try and identify the birds, which I'm hopeless at. Can someone (please) tell me what these are ?

Left: Red Shoveler Anas platalea
Right: Hooded Merganser Lophodytes cucullatus (female)
Presumably they were in a collection?

Thanks for that - they were at the WWT, Slimbridge if my memory is correct.

Do you know whether these birds were free-flying, or do they have "clipped" wings Dave? (i.e. do they have the potential ability to escape).

I'm guessing that they must be clipped, the reserve is on the Severn estuary in the UK and they do get a lot of migrants - but several of them aren't native or transient uk species. Slimbridge has had a record of sucessful breeding and as the birds are outside I can't see how else they would keep them there.
