I built a 1-stall horse barn in 2006 and in 2007 I was amazed when a pair of barn swallows moved in. It was incredible to watch them build the nest and watch the babies grow - 5 little teenagers flew the coop in the fall. I've fallen in love with these birds and was ECSTATIC when one returned a week ago. I don't think it's one of the original pair, I like to think it's one of their babies. I can dream.. hehe.
I was positive it was a male, and kept telling him he needed to find himself a wife. Today, finally, I went to feed the horse and TWO swallows flew out. I was so happy! Except for.. When I went to the barn tonight.. They look like TWO MALES! Now, I'm not homophobic but I'm pretty sure barn swallows can't be gay, or don't because it's their instinct to breed ;p
ANYWAY, I got pictures tonight.
The lighter-breasted one is the original (seen in all 4 pics, on the left in those with both). I assumed he was male because a) he has a longer, very forked tail and b) he was the first to arrive.
The darker one (on the right, in 2 photos) arrived today and confuses me because a) it has a darker breast and b) its tail is the same length as the first!
