I apologize in advance if thsi is the wrong place to post this.
There was a 6.2 earthquake in Costa Rica two days ago with its epicenter along the Varablanca-San Miguel road. Damage and loss of life was concentrated in this area; a regular birding route for cloud forest and middle elevation species.
The Peace Lodge inside the La Paz Waterfall Gardens collapsed and sections of the road were wiped off the map. It was announced on the news last night that the road would probably not be rebuilt nor would Cinchona which tragically was entirely destroyed. The cafes at Cinchona were a wonderful birding site run by friendly, bird friendly people. We can only hope that the owners somehow survived. I'm not sure yet of the status of the road to Virgen del Socorro.
