I was at Herrington CP, Durham on Fri watching a resident partially albinistic Moorhen when I noticed another bird showing paler underparts than expected. Attached are three photos - first is partially albinistic bird, second is individual showing paler underparts and third is what I would expect a normal bird to look like.
As I looked at the other Moorhens, I realised that all birds present showed faint and small white flecking on the underparts, particularly towards the vent. This seems fairly normal, but the second bird appears to be abnormal - as does obviously the pied bird. Is the second bird just an immature, or is it possibly an offspring of the pied bird. Is this the start of a new pied subspecies of Moorhen?!
Note also that the pied bird, and second bird attached both show white feathering around the throat - tricky to see in photo.
