I find it hard to believe this happened. I was sat in the beach bar at Nuova Forte in Quarteira this afternoon enjoying the sun and a cool beer, when 9 (yes, 9 again) purple herons flew past in an easterly direction, about 50m off the shore. I had my camera with me and took some shots, they were a bit far away, but they were clearly purple herons.
Earlier I had seen two purple herons flying into the reed beds at the far end of the lake there, but I could not find them on a walk round the lake later.
Also saw 7 garganey on the lake (first time I have seen them there), together with the usual pochard, red-crested pochard, tufted ducks, etc.
