ID help please
Hi, I took these photo's today in the scrub along the Ribble estuary in Lancashire, UK. I think the first two may be a Meadow Pipit and the third possibly a Stonechat but am not certain. Your opinions greatly appreciated & thanks in advance, Alan

Correct Alan - and the the third is a female Stonechat (I would not care to "sex" Meadow Pipits!!).
And welcome to SurfbirdsForum.

I've seen Stonechat's before, but the Meadow Pipit is a life tick. Also today had 3 other Lifers - Jackdaw, Turnstone and Redshank - so I'm grinning madly!
Thanks for such a swift response,

Hi Alan, welcome to the forum! It's fun, at this stage, to be seeing so many lifers so easily.

Your Stonechat is a fairly pale one - they vary a bit in tone, but most in Britain are darker, more orangey-brown than yours, like the ones below (male left, female right).

The stonechats breed in the sand dunes along the Ribble and others over-winter on the Ribble coast but more will passing through heading back to other breeding grounds. You should have called into RSPB Marshside and looked for the avocets!
Enjoy all the new birds.
