We have the friendliest bird that has been living all winter in our holly bush. Every day when I drive in the driveway, it's perched on the top holly branch, almost like it's waiting for me. I can get close...up to about 3 feet then it gets shy and hides in the bush. I know nothing about birds. We live in Green Harbor, MA with the ocean 2 streets over and a salt marsh with beautiful blue herons in our back yard.
My 4 year old grandson named this bird JEFF. We whistle to it, take pictures, and almost feel it is tame. Of course, we would never attempt to invade it's home or violate it's space.
We don't know if it's a male or female. We'd LOVE to learn more about it. From looking at bird books, it's most similar to the Junco family, but it's beak is very dark and the pictures I've found in books of the Junco had a lighter beak.
We'd appreciate any help you experts have with identifying our friend!
