On 8th November 2008 I took the attached photo at Forte Nuova in Quarteira, Algarve. I was scanning round the lagoon there with my camera at 500mm and saw in the viewfinder a bird in a tree on the opposite side of the lagoon. That makes it about 80 - 100 metres away.
When I first glimpsed the bird I thought it might be a kingfisher, then when I zomed in on the photo it clearly wasn't, but I don't have much of a clue as to what it might be. At a guess I would say it was about the size of a magpie or a bit smaller. It has a long tail, and looks much like a shrike, except that I don't know of one with this colouring.
The first picture shows the uncropped view at 500mm. The second is the same photo cropped as much as I dare.
I didn't know of Surfbirds at the time so it didn't get posted for i.d., but it's been annoying me for ages. Even if a definite i.d. is not possible from this photo, it would be nice to have some suggestions as to what it could possibly be.
