Bird ID Please
I have decided I'm really rubbish at identifying birds, unless they are the usual crowd of Tits, Finches etc. that I see every day. Can anyone tell me what these are, both taken in Wiltshire UK. What guides/books do you guys use or recommend for finding IDs ?

thanks for that. I'm OK with the Black Cap having looked it up on the RSPB site, but Muck Duck ? I can't find anything on it ?

Not sure about the first photo, I would go for Willow Warbler rather then Blackcap.
The second is definitely "duck a l'orange" (i.e. a hybrid domestic duck with a lot of Mallard in there).
The best I.D. book is: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Collins-Bird.../dp/0002197286 but there is a new edition due out soon. However, picking up the current edition at Amazon's price is worth the dosh.

Joe is certainly correct Colin, the first photo is a male Blackcap. Look closely above the grey around the eye and you'll see its black cap.

Ah, thanks for explaining that Colin - I guess that's why it wasn't showing up in my searches. It seems to have a lot of Blue in the head and breast feathers which was leading me off in the wrong direction. I've looked at the original 10 meg image and I think I'd agree with Joe and Ben on the first photo, unless you think there is some detail that suggests the Warbler.

Just for extra info . . . the tree the Blackcap is perched in, is a Field Maple.

Yep, I fiddles with the exposure of this image and it becomes more obvious Blackcap.
