Are any of the current losses in Cuckoos due to breeding strategy and therefore due in some part to natural selection? Obviously relying on host species to rear young, killing the young of host species and destroying eggs only works if population of host species remains at sustainable level.
Its the same as predators and prey. predators kill to survive, but if they were always successful prey wouldn't exist and they would starve to death!
