Sorry for the quality, but the bird insisted on being quite far away and staying there.
And I would say that it is probably an adult female judging by the dark golden head - juvenile and immature birds of both sexes can be difficult, but the head tends to be a paler cream colour.

the other way round, colin - this is a juvenile marsh harrier due to its orangey coloured crown. adult females have paler ones.
I think that this is a Squacco Heron (Ardeola ralloides); they look very "drab" when perched but in flight they become much paler (and are often confused with Cattle Egret - Bubulcus ibis).
