I will be visiting my girlfriend in Newcastle for 3-4 weeks from mid-September to mid-October. While she attends class during the day, I am looking to visit some areas good for birding/hiking. Anyone have any suggestions?
As of right now, I'm looking into making day trips to Saltholme and the Holy Island area. Any particular spots at either of those that are of particular interest? I know of Jesmond Dene right in Newcastle, but are there any other spots I should visit?
Additionally, I will probably spent a couple days visiting Scotland and further south in England. Any must-bird areas are welcome, even if they aren't in the Northeast region.
Even any tips on getting to these places would be appreciated. I have an 8 day rail pass good for England, Scotland and Wales and I plan on using the bus system quite a bit.
Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
