I went with my mate Roger today to try and get the Red-breasted Flycatcher at Figueira (Vila do Bispo). Visited this private garden twice, second time with Simon present, and still nothing - we think it has moved on.
A consolation was good views of a very confiding White-rumped Sandpiper at Martinhal, near Sagres. Not a lifer for me but previous birds here have all been juvenile or 1st winter - this bird is an adult in an advanced stage of moult into winter plumage but still with some of its reddish-brown breeding plumage remaining. The lighting was not good and the damned bird was facing the wrong way in most of the 200+ shots I took, but it did fly and show its pristine white rump:
The last image, taken at a greater distance, shows an aggressive attack on the bird by one of three Common Sandpipers which was clearly "anti American".
