Is it really the same gull? The first one is a Herring - note the well streaked head and neck.
The other one , with yellow legs and a primary pattern the could well belong to a YLG.
definitely the same gull! Is a hybrid a possibility?
very odd, as jan has said the first picture shows a herring gull, the second appears to look like like a yellow legged gull, i note that in the 1st picture has some over exposure which appears to have obliterated some of the streaking and to me there is a hint of streaking left just visible on there, just gos to show how much light can affect gulls, they are so easily affected by it,
could we have a yellow legged herring gull?
the top picture would appear to have a red eye ring, does that carry any significance with id or is it just a "red Herring"?
I did notice that orbital ring looks the reddish in the first pic. However, Itīs still a Herring Gull, or should I say, itīs not a YLG. Maybe a yellow-legged argentatus or preferable an argenteus, which sometimes shows a reddish orbital ring, but then again the combination for an argentatus of a mirror on p10 and a well-defined black mark on p5would suggest argenteus rather than argentatus. On the water structure fits Herring with the bill shape and no red on the upper mandible (not shown by all YLG).
