    Default Green-winged Teal, Minsmere

It was nice to get out today, and even better when the first bird I checked at Minsmere turned out to be this drake Green-winged Teal. Presumably, it is the returning bird from last winter; note the lack of horizontal white stripe, making it easy to pick out amongst a group of Eurasian Teal.

Very nice find Brian. I remember finding a male carolinensis at Stodmarsh, near Canterbury, about 18 years ago - the main I.D. feature is quite extraordinary when you think about it, given that the rest of the plumage is so similar to Eurasian Teal.

I spend a lot of time at this time of year sifting through huge numbers of Teal (the commonest wintering duck in Algarve) but have never found another, despite the relative abundance of other Yank species in recent years.
