I live in in N Italy near Venice and am trying to ID a bird which seems to have arrived this year for the first time here...Any suggestions, or pointers to online resources I could use to try and ID it. I've tried Wiki Italian birds (brilliant list, but can't see anything there)
It looks very similar to a nightingale. Similar size. Drab brown with creamish breast. Faint hint of cream eye band. Very "clean" looking colours: no striations. Perching bird. Insect-eating beak. Level flight.
But most striking feature by far is its call. Never heard anything like it. A very loud, short slightly raucous screech which it repeats usually 3-4 times with 2-3 second pause. They sing all day, regardless of heat, flitting from tree to tree in very localised area. It sounds very much like a cross between a seagull and a bird of prey. When I first heard it I was convinced it was a bird of prey cos we've got peregrine falcons nesting on the local church. I've recorded it if anyone's interested but have no idea how to make it available online. Suggstions?
