Can anyone help me identify this bird please. I'm a novice birdwatcher and have never seen anything like it.
A few days ago (August 29th) I was watching the estuary birds from a house just above the beach at Seasalter, Kent, when two small birds about the size of a sparrow with grey/brown head and body and a very distinct black and white barred tail flew onto the balcony rail. They very quickly flew off again but I noticed one a few moments later in a hawthorn hedge just to the left of the balcony in amongst a group of sparrows. In profile it had a very short pointed beak. It stayed a short while before flying off again.
Does anyone have any ideas of what it might be? Thanks.
