Had the odd experience of watching a Merlin take a bat in broad daylight. What is a bat doing out then? Could it be white-nose syndrome?
A have pictures of it at http://www.nemesisbird.com/2010/11/merlin-vs-bat/
It could be the bat was sick, or could be it had been put out of hibernation by disturbance.
Day-flying bats are at high risk of capture by raptors, which is the main reason why bats generally don't fly by day.
I added a video I took of the Merlin eating the bat at http://www.nemesisbird.com/2010/11/m...bat-the-movie/
